Our Open Showcase events are over but this page remains to celebrate the UK-based teachers, students and schools involved in the pan-European Make It Open project.

This page has details of all events, including an online panel session on the benefits of Open Schooling and its future potential with contributions from Open Learning practitioners, industry representatives and school leadership as well as our team here at Forth. Targeting teachers, school leaders, researchers, policymakers and education practitioners, the event took place on Tuesday, 13th June, 2023.

Make it Open UK Hub: working in partnership with the Great Science Share for Schools 2023

The Great Science Share for Schools campaign inspires 5-14 year olds and their teachers to ask-investigate and share scientific questions with new audiences. Over 315,000 young people took part in 2022 by sharing their science and STEM learning projects on a single day in June. Participating students learn that science is more than just the investigations they do in class. This year schools in the Great Science Share can access Make it Open resources, and all schools running a Make it Open project will be joining the big GFFsF share under our banner.

Rose Edmondson, Secondary schools Teacher of Science

Rose Edmondson has been teaching science in secondary for more than 20 years and for much of that time she has been based in the secondary science classroom. Passionate about literacy in science, Rose is currently working at a fantastic school in Rochdale ‘where I work alongside dedicated community partners to develop projects to engage families and young people in STEM learning.’ Rose took part in the Make it Open Schooling European Schoolnet Academy course. She developed and delivered her own Open Schooling Lesson Scenario called Magnificent Moss involving national experts and local primary schools.

Anna Ploszajski, Material Scientist

Dr Anna Ploszajski is a London Based award-winning materials scientist, presenter, comedian and storyteller based in London. She’s a materials generalist, equally fascinated by metals, plastics, ceramics, glasses and substances from the natural world. Her work centres around engaging traditionally underserved audiences with materials science and engineering through writing, podcasting, presenting and social media. Her first book, Handmade: A Scientist’s Search for Meaning Through Making is the story of materials through making and doing. Oh, and it’s pronounced “Por-shy-ski”.

Malcolm Groves, Founder Director at Schools of Tomorrow

Dr Malcolm Groves has worked at the forefront of educational innovation for over 40 years, embracing primary and secondary education, youth work and adult education. He has been a registered OFSTED inspector and national adviser for specialist schools. He has led a wide range of school and community education initiatives. Malcolm is a founder director of the ground-breaking research and development network, Schools of Tomorrow. He is the author of ‘Regenerating Schools’ and co-author with John West-Burnham of ‘Leadership for Tomorrow’, ‘Flipping Schools!’ and’ So What Now? – Time for learning in your school to face the future’

Lynne Bianchi, Director of The Science & Engineering Education Research and Innovation Hub

Dr Lynne Bianchi specialises in science and engineering education, with a specialism in the primary phase, student-led learning and working with in-service teachers. She became Director of the SEERIH in 2014, a nationally recognised centre of science and engineering education. Lynne champions the vision that every child should have experiences that inform their choices and decisions about STEM. She is founding directing The Great Science Share for Schools which has created a culture of collaboration across the sector and impacted on over 450,000 young people.

Dee Halligan, Director at Forth

Dee Halligan is an accomplished creative strategist who over 20 years has built a portfolio of exploratory engagement and learning projects with clients such as the National Trust, the Science Museum and Google. In 2021 she co-founded Forth as a vehicle for an increasingly urgent agenda around engagement, learning and skills for social sustainability and climate response. She is currently continuing Forth’s work in Open Learning through a project entitled Levers: Learning Ventures for Climate Justice.
